Friendship is Magic: Season 1 review

Since I had finished watching all the episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's first season, I thought I'd give reviewing all them a go. So, here goes...

Friendship is Magic
Rating: 7.1/10.0 (Good)

This was a good episode. Not GREAT, but good. It establishes the show quite nicely, and it has a good conflict. It might be a bit...tough and clichéd, but all in all, I liked this episode.

The Ticket Master
Rating: 7.0/10.0 (Good)

This has a some things going for it, even if it is a bit weak. The moral is actually good an applicable, and, like the previous two-parter, it had some funny jokes. Of course, we never see WHO got the tickets, but it's still a fun episode.

Applebluck Season
Rating: 8.7/10.0 (Great)

This is one of my personal favorites of the show. It's really funny, and teaches a very good moral. It's basically like Baby Cakes or A Jones for a Smith done right.

Griffon The Brush-Off
Rating: 7.0/10.0 (Good)

While I don't really like Gilda, we're not supposed to like her. It's a pretty funny episode with another good moral.

Boast Busters
Rating: 4.0/10.0 (Mediocre)

Welcome to the first dud of the show. I can't really help but feel sorry for Trixie; she was just doing her job. Are you saying that people shouldn't do their jobs correctly? Sure, boasting is bad, but The Mysterious Mare-Do Well did that moral better.

Dragonshy
Rating: 7.4/10.0 (Good)

This easily had the potential to become a bad episode, but instead, it became one of the funniest, most character-developing episodes of the show. Fluttershy becomes braver near the end by facing her fear of dragons. It's pretty good.

Look Before You Sleep
Rating: 5.5/10.0 (Even)

This...was not a good episode. It wasn't bad, but I felt like they were going to pull another Oh, Brother! on me (or a The Hurricane!, or a Pineapple Fever, or a Party Pooper Pants). Granted, the ending with Applejack and Rarity making up is...decent, but it's far from good.

Bridle Gossip
Rating: 5.4/10.0 (Even)

The plot is a bit contrived, and even has some...racist implications for the first few thirds. The moral and ending save it from being a bad episode, but don't make it a good episode. However, there are fun moments like Appletini and Flutterguy's dialogue.

Rating: 5.1/10.0 (Even)

This episode is not good. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's really close. Why is that only Pinkie Pie knows what the parasprites are, and not Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, or Princess Celestia? What's with the vomit jokes? This is a rather poorly-written episode, and I have good reason for my it's my #10 least-favorite of the show. The only thing saving it is the moral, which is pretty good.

Rating: 6.0/10.0 (Okay)

This episode doesn't have a lot going for it, but there's more going for it than against it. It has some funny jokes, and some character development for Twilight. However, there's still a lot about it that doesn't make sense, which brings it down a bit.

Behold, the prerquisite to The Cutie Mark Chronicles. Applebloom tries to get her cutie mark in many various ways, all of them failing. Even though I don't like Diamond Tiara, it's still a good episode with a good moral.

Rating: 7.5/10.0 (Good)

This episode shows some character development between Rainbow Dash and Applejack, and some very fun and interesting moments in the show. Not to mention, it does have a pretty good moral.

Rating: 7.2/10.0 (Good)

This was the show's second attempt at a "character goes crazy" plot, and they did very well, even if it's not as good as Applebuck Season. Rarity's moments in the episode are also pretty fun, and the moral is good once again.

Rating: 7.0/10.0 (Good)

Okay, so the moral is far from applicable, but the character interactions between Twilight and Pinkie Pie are fun, and the jokes are just hilarious. It's a pretty fun episode.

Rating: 9.2/10.0 (Awesome)

Before this, Sisterhooves Social was my favorite episode. Now, this is. A lot of things just go right here. Rainbow Dash undergoes some character development. So do Rarity and Fluttershy, to a lesser extent. Everyone is in character. We finally get to see Cloudsdale. The Sonic Rainboom is undoubtedly amazing. It's a really fun episode with next to no noticeable flaws.

Rating: 6.3/10.0 (Okay)

This episode is not very good, but it does have some moments, and Fluttershy's assertiveness is done sorta well here. Of course, there are some plot holes here and there, and the CMC can get a bit annoying in this one.

Rating: 5.5/10.0 (Even)

This episode is not very good. Again, not bad, but not good. On the bright side, it does have a good moral, but the CMC tend to get even more annoying than in the last one. And, yes, the song is a bit grating, to say the least.

Rating: 7.0/10.0 (Good)

This episode was very close to getting an "okay", but the funny jokes and good moral saved it. Rarity might have been a bit...irritating, but that didn't ruin the episode, and it served an important part of the plot.

While this episode might have been a bit contrived, it establishes some character development between Twilight, Rarity, and Fluttershy. It also has its funny moments, mostly thanks to Pinkie Pie.

This episode shows a VERY APPLICABLE moral (one of the best of the show) about compromising. It also has some funny jokes and interesting scenes, and the native bison (THEY'RE NOT BUFFALO) are a very interesting group.

Rating: 2.9/10.0 (Bad)

This is one of the very few episodes of this show that I actually HATE. Why? Because it's a Fluttershy-torture porn where Philomena pulls a very meanspirited prank (She thought she killed him, for Pete's sake!). Celestia did not help at all. And don't get me started on the implications...

Rating: 9.0/10.0 (Awesome)

This is a real step up from the last episode. It tells the stories of how the Mane Six got their cutie marks - who doesn't love a good backstory episode? I sure do! Not to mention, Scootaloo is funny here.

Rating: 5.1/10.0 (Even)

This is a poorly-written episode. Even this show can't do a jealousy plot very well. The only thing making it not bad are the jokes, which just save it. The moral is okay, but they didn't really handle it very well.

Rating: 8.8/10.0 (Great)

I can see why everyone loves this episodes. IT'S HILARIOUS...not to mention that it has a pretty good moral about paranoia; it's like a combination of Squid's Day Off, Texas, and Bummer Vacation (although I didn't like BV, but that's besides the point). Anyway, I loved it, and I can see why everyone loves it.

Rating: 7.0/10.0 (Good)

This episode would show us the Grand Galloping Gala we've been waiting for. It has some pretty interesting and funny stories, and while the moral is not the best of the show (or even of the season), it's still a fairly decent moral.

And now onto the best and worst episode lists...

Season 1 has some good episodes, but not many that stand out. Some are "meh" or mediocre, but only one of them is truly bad. It's not the greatest season (it might even be the weakest season), but it still has quite a few episodes that are worth watching.
